How to Clean Stainless Steel Appliances
Direction-of-grain technique plus the products that actually shine — no swirl marks.
Stainless steel isn't hard to clean — it's hard to finish. The greasy swirls and streaks everyone complains about are a technique failure, not a chemistry failure. Once you know the grain trick and pick a product that doesn't streak, stainless is honestly the fastest surface in the kitchen.
The grain rule
Stainless has a brushed texture running in one direction. Always final-wipe along the grain; wiping across it smears the finish and creates the streaky look everyone hates.
Degrease first, shine second
Real grease build-up on the range hood and handles needs a degreasing first pass (Dawn Powerwash handles it), then a streak-free polish second pass along the grain.
Watch product choice
Some sprays leave residue, so look for streak-free glass/stainless formulas. Bar Keepers Friend style paste does restoration on tarnished sinks; a good spray does the daily maintenance.
